Morningside residents can anticipate a healthier local environment with the imminent commencement of Phase 2 of the Sandspruit Riverbank Rehabilitation Project. This critical infrastructure initiative, spearheaded by the City of Johannesburg's Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), aims to address persistent erosion issues along the Sandspruit, particularly in areas adjacent to residential properties and public green spaces within the affluent suburb.

The second phase of the project will focus on bio-engineering techniques, including the strategic planting of indigenous vegetation, gabion basket installations, and the removal of invasive alien species. These measures are designed to stabilise riverbanks, improve water quality, and enhance biodiversity, directly impacting the ecological health of the Sandspruit which flows through parts of Morningside. The initial phase successfully addressed critical erosion points near the Morningside Shopping Centre, and this expansion will extend the benefits further downstream.

Ward 103 Councillor Vincent Earp highlighted the community's proactive involvement and the long-term benefits of the project. “Our residents have consistently voiced concerns about the degradation of the Sandspruit, and this next phase is a direct response to their calls for action. Not only will it protect property from erosion, but it will also transform the river into a more vibrant ecological corridor for everyone to enjoy. We anticipate minimal disruption during construction, and we urge residents to cooperate with the project teams for its successful completion,” Councillor Earp stated.

Work is expected to begin in early March, with completion projected for late 2024, subject to weather conditions. The EISD has assured that regular updates will be provided to the community through local ward committees and public notices. This project underscores the City's commitment to sustainable urban development and the preservation of natural assets within its key residential areas.
