Morningside residents are experiencing a heightened sense of security, thanks to the proactive efforts of the Morningside Neighbourhood Watch (MNW). The MNW's latest quarterly report, covering April to June 2024, indicates a 15% reduction in reported residential burglaries compared to the previous quarter. This positive trend is attributed to increased patroller visibility, improved CCTV surveillance integration, and enhanced collaboration with private security firms operating in the area.
The report details several successful interventions, including the apprehension of two suspects attempting to gain entry into a property near the Sandspruit river greenbelt last month. These successes are often the result of swift communication between residents, MNW patrollers, and armed response units. The MNW's focus on intelligence-led patrolling, identifying patterns and hotspots, particularly around the perimeter of the suburb and areas adjacent to major thoroughfares like Rivonia Road, has proven effective.
Captain Sipho Dlamini, spokesperson for the Sandton South African Police Service (SAPS), commended the MNW's dedication. "The Morningside Neighbourhood Watch is a prime example of effective community policing. Their commitment significantly augments SAPS efforts, especially in an area as geographically diverse as Morningside with its mix of high-density residential and commercial zones. The data clearly shows that when communities are organised and work alongside law enforcement, crime rates decline." Captain Dlamini also stressed the importance of residents continuing to report all suspicious activities, no matter how minor they may seem.
Looking ahead, the MNW plans to expand its public awareness campaigns, focusing on holiday season security tips and encouraging more residents to join their volunteer ranks. They are also exploring further technological enhancements to their monitoring capabilities, aiming to maintain and further improve the safety standards that Morningside is becoming known for.
