Morningside High School is celebrating a significant academic achievement after its mathematics department was honoured with the prestigious 'Gauteng Excellence in STEM Education' award. The recognition comes after a remarkable showing by its students in the recent provincial Maths Olympiad, where a record number of Morningside High participants placed in the top 10%.
The award, presented by the Gauteng Department of Education, highlights the school's commitment to fostering strong foundational skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Principal Thandiwe Mkhize credited the dedication of both educators and students for this success. "This award is a testament to the hard work and innovative teaching methods employed by our mathematics faculty," said Mkhize. "We believe in nurturing a deep understanding of these critical subjects, which are essential for future national development and global competitiveness. Our students' enthusiasm and perseverance were truly inspiring."
The school implemented a new after-school mathematics enrichment programme last year, focusing on problem-solving and critical thinking beyond the standard curriculum. This initiative, supported by parent volunteers and local businesses, is believed to have played a crucial role in preparing students for the Olympiad's challenging format. Grade 11 student, Sipho Ndlovu, who placed in the top 50 provincially, commented, "The extra sessions really helped us tackle complex problems from different angles. It wasn't just about memorising formulas; it was about understanding why and how things work."
This achievement not only boosts Morningside High's academic standing but also reinforces Morningside's reputation as a hub for quality education within the Sandton area. The school plans to expand its STEM programmes, including new robotics and coding initiatives, to build on this success and continue empowering its students for future challenges.
