The agenda focused on tangible steps to improve local safety and security, with significant discussion around the impact of deteriorating infrastructure, particularly potholes, on crime prevention and response times.
Key points of discussion included the recent increase in opportunistic crimes, such as smash-and-grabs near major intersections leading to Morningside Shopping Centre, and residential break-ins in areas bordering the Sandspruit river. Attendees also raised concerns about the effectiveness of current street lighting in certain residential pockets. The CPF chairperson, Mr. David Naidoo, presented a detailed report outlining recent successes, including the apprehension of suspects involved in a series of car thefts near Mediclinic Morningside thanks to collaborative efforts between private security and SAPS.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the ongoing challenge of road maintenance. Residents highlighted how potholes not only pose a direct traffic hazard but also force vehicles to slow down, making them more vulnerable to criminal activity. Captain Themba Ndlovu, spokesperson for Sandton SAPS, addressed the concerns, stating, "We understand the frustration regarding potholes; they do impede our response times and create opportunities for criminals. We are actively engaging with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to escalate these critical repairs, especially along routes frequently used by our patrol units and residents commuting to and from Sandton CBD. Community vigilance and reporting are crucial, and we urge residents to continue using our official channels to report suspicious activities."
The CPF committed to forming a sub-committee specifically dedicated to liaising with municipal departments regarding infrastructure issues, aiming for a more proactive approach to maintaining the suburb's high standards. Residents were encouraged to join the local WhatsApp safety groups for real-time alerts and to participate in upcoming neighbourhood watch training initiatives.
